ARTS PROJECT TO SHOWCASE COLLECTIVE EFFORTS OF CHILDREN – NOT FOR RACIAL POLITICKING BY IRRESPONSIBLE POLITICIANS

The Arts, Heritage and Civil Society organizations and community of Kuala Lumpur and Penang condemn the harassment and politicking around a community arts project in Penang. The Penang Arts Education Society (Arts-ED) which published the myBalikpulau booklet-cum-newsletter as a “showcase of the collective efforts” of Balik Pulau children and Arts-ED facilitators, are now accused of deliberately twisting history and insulting the Malays in Penang. 

Arts-ED is not just well known for its myBalikpulau project but has worked on street theatrical performances, musicals, photography exhibitions and appreciation of history through heritage trails and oral history. In short it is dedicated towards facilitating young people in safeguarding and promoting their natural, social, cultural and built heritage through the medium of art.   

The myBalikpulau project is similar to the numerous creative outputs of the Malaysian arts community which offer alternative and refreshing viewpoints so that we can truly appreciate the rich heritage of Malaysia. Arts-ED and the children involved in the myBalikpulau project should be praised and supported, but instead they are being ridiculed and threatened. Lodging 15 police reports is systematic harassment amounting to bullying.

We the undersigned must point out that the real threat here is divisive race politics and irresponsible politicians who do not care for freedom of expression, social justice and democracy in Malaysia.

Kumpulan kumpulan seni, warisan dan organisasi-organisasi sivil dari Kuala Lumpur dan Pulau Pinang membantah kuat gangguan dan hasutan bersifat perkauman terhadap risalah myBALIKpulau yang diterbitkan oleh Persatuan Pendidikan Seni Pulau Pinang (Arts-ED). Risalah myBALIKpulau yang merupai usaha koleftif kanak-kanak Balik Pulau bersama fasilitator/ pemudah cara Arts-ED, telah dituduh mempermainkan sejarah dan menghina Melayu di Pulau Pinang.

Arts-ED dikenali dalam bidang pendidikan seni dan telah menjalankan projek-projek seni seperti persembahan teater jalanan, muzikal, pameran fotografi dan apresiasi terhadap sejarah melalui jejak warisan dan sejarah lisan. Ringkasnya, Arts-ED berdedikasi memudahkan generasi muda untuk memahami, memelihara dan mempromosikan alam semulajadi, sosial, budaya dan warisan ketara mereka melalui medium seni.

Projek myBALIKpulau serupa dengan pelbagai karya seni kreatif yang dihasilkan oleh kumpulan-kumpulan seni yang lain yang menawarkan pandangan alternatif dan pandangan baru supaya kita boleh benar-benar menghargai warisan kaya Malaysia. 

Arts-ED dan kanak-kanak yang terlibat dalam projek myBALIKpulau harus dipuji dan disokong, tetapi mereka diejek dan diancam. 15 laporan polis yang dilaporkan adalah gangguan sistematik seerti dengan niat membuli.

Kami yang memberi tandatangan di sini ingin menekankan bahawa ancaman ini sebenarnya adalah ahli politik yang tidak bertanggungjawab yang menggunakan politik perkauman dan tidak peduli kebebasan berekspresi, keadilan sosial dan demokrasi di Malaysia.

吉隆坡与槟城的艺术,  古迹文教及公民社会团体/组织齐声谴责种族主义滋事份子骚扰和恶意政治化的行径。由槟城艺术教育协会(Arts-ED) 所出版，集合浮罗山背青少年和Arts-ED协调员们心血的《我的浮罗山背》刊物，日前被指责扭曲历史，以及侮辱槟城马来人。

 《我的浮罗山背》并非Arts-ED 唯一被广泛认识的艺术计划，Arts-ED长期经营街头戏剧表演、音乐、摄影，及通过古迹路径和口述历史去促进对历史的领会。他们以艺术作为媒介教育青少年，维护和推广自然、社会、文化以及古迹建筑。

 《我的浮罗山背》计划，和其他许多马来西亚艺术工作者的创意杰作一样，提供非一般和新鲜的视角，让我们真正领会马来西亚丰富的历史遗产。Arts-ED 团队和参与《我的浮罗山背》计划的青少年应该被赞许和支持，而非像现在那般被奚落和威胁。15个报案行径是系统性的骚扰，形同欺压。

我们以下签署的团体严正声明，真正的威胁来自于分化人民的种族政治和弃言论自由，社会正义和民主于不顾的失责政治人物。

55个来自吉隆坡与槟城的艺术,、古迹文教及公民社会团体今天齐声谴责，种族主义滋事份子骚扰和恶意政治化由槟城艺术教育协会(Arts-ED) 出版的《我的浮罗山背》刊物，令我国的艺术教育蒙上阴影。

他们点出，集合浮罗山背青少年和Arts-ED协调员心血的《我的浮罗山背》刊物，日前被指责扭曲历史及侮辱槟城马来人，但事实上Arts-ED团队和参与此计划的青少年应被赞许和支持，而非像现般被奚落和威胁。

“15个报案行径是一种系统性的骚扰，形同欺压。”

“真正的威胁来自于分化人民的种族政治和弃言论自由，社会正义和民主于不顾的失责政治人物。”

不同视角领会历史遗产

33个艺术团体及22个文教公民组织在一份联署声明点出，《我的浮罗山背》 并非Arts-ED 唯一被广泛认识的艺术计划，该组织长期经营街头戏剧表演、音乐、摄影及通过古迹路径和口述历史去促进对历史的领会。

“他们以艺术作为媒介教育青少年，维护和推广自然、社会、文化以及古迹建筑。”

“《我的浮罗山背》计划和其他许多马来西亚艺术工作者的创意杰作一样，提供非一般和新鲜的视角，让我们真正领会马来西亚丰富的历史遗产。”

Reka Art Space总监朱锡添代读是在今午的记者会上，代读此项联合声明。出席者包括前槟州教育事务州行政议员杜乾焕、Arts-ED负责人珍纳毕莱（Janet Pillai ）、导游及计划参与者的家长等。

杜乾焕证实由前朝资助

另一方面，杜乾焕证实，《我的浮罗山背》计划是由前朝州政府下的槟城教育咨询委员会（PECC）所发起、推介及资助，现任州政府没涉及其中。

杜乾焕曾在1995年至2008年期间掌管槟州教育、人力资源发展、科学、工艺与创新事务，并从1997年槟城教育咨询委员会成立后就担任主席，直到2008年3月8日。

1999年成立的Arts-Ed是当时槟城教育咨询委员会所进行的数个计划之一。其它的计划项目包括应付学习障碍、推动终身学习、学前教育、大专教育、推动学习数理的兴趣及母语教育。社会经济与环境研究中心（SERI）则被委任为秘书处。

根据杜乾焕，在他担任教育咨询委员会主席期间，两项由Arts-ED 鉴定的计划获得批准、资助及执行。它们分别是在乔治市内城区落实的《城市小孩》（Anak-anak Kota）及他亲自于2007年推介的《我的浮罗山背》。

前任政府在位期间，作为浮罗山背古迹项目成品的《我的浮罗山背》也获得槟城旅游促进委员会及Digi 的资助。唯因参与的学生需时收集资料，刊物近期才出版。

高度肯定Arts-Ed贡献

无论如何，杜乾焕在记者会上不仅未与Arts-Ed撇清关系，更高度肯定后者的工作且引以为荣。

对他而言，Arts-Ed通过革新与创意且大部分为非正式的方法，如街头戏剧表演、音乐、摄影及通过古迹路径和口述历史去推动艺术教育，有助促进对历史的领会。

“他们的工作一直都富有创意，因此成功激励跨越种族和宗教背景的年青人学习。”

“可以肯定地说，槟城州的艺术水准得以提升，要归功于珍纳毕莱和她的Arts-Ed团队之工作。我们仅仅依靠长久以来忽略艺术的正规学校制度，是不可能达到提升艺术水准。”

指控没大格局伤害学生

此外，杜乾焕不苟同，巫统浮罗勿洞州议员莫哈末法立和数个马来组织称《我的浮罗山背》含有羞辱马来人的文字和插图的说法。

“我亲自翻阅这份刊物，没发现任何与这些指责相关的内容。与此相反，这是一份经过充分研究的文献，包含了由来自各族群年青人根据口述历史所写的文字。”

他觉得，“羞辱马来人”的指控缺乏大格局，散发否定一项好计划的错误讯息及对很多义务为槟州教育奉献的人士极度不公平。

“他们也伤害了很多付出极大努力出版《我的浮罗山背》的学生的感受。这些学生的参与，是由追求知识的真诚渴望所驱动与激励。他们很明显没有任何企图要贬低任何族群。”

声援者轰种族政治搞鬼

记者会结束后，在场的文艺工作者及家长也纷纷替《我的浮罗山背》打抱不平，力挺Arts-Ed继续推广艺术教育及讨伐种族主义份子。

前理大讲师依斯迈（Ismail Harshim）表示，艺术是文明的产物，但当71岁的他仍从Arts-Ed的教育工作中感到受益良多之际，却有人企图政治化及施压腰斩计划。

“这太令人伤心了。学生应该学习及开拓视野，如果要互相了解，即使回教徒去参观基督教堂或华人进入回教堂又有什么问题？都没叫你改教，但凡事就是会引起争议。”

导游许月清则一度哽咽及激动地抨击，批评《我的浮罗山背》者对艺术教育一窍不通，贬低一份杰出的计划，令原本应感到骄傲的学生心生罪恶感。

曾担任《我的浮罗山背》计划协调员的蒂雅娜（Diyana Aini）呼应说，希望指控者可在开炮前先好功课。

Press Statement on the Publication ‘my BalikPulau’  by Toh Kin Woon, former State Executive Councilor for Education

1.      my BalikPulau, a newsletter published by Arts-Ed, an NGO dedicated to the promotion of arts in education, has come under attacks and criticisms  by Muhammad Farid Saad, the State Assemblyman for Pulau Betong and several Malay groups since the beginning of February this year. Many police reports have already been made and police investigations begun. They claimed that the newsletter contains inaccurate historical facts and illustrations, which insulted the Malays. They also asserted that the present State Government is behind the publication of myBalikPulau.

2.      As a former State Executive Councilor for Education, I wish to make several clarifications related to Arts-Ed and the newsletter, myBalikPulau.

3.      Launched in 1999, Arts-Ed was one of several initiatives undertaken by the then Penang Education Consultative Council (PECC), of which I was its Chairman from 1997, the year of its establishment, till March 8, 2008. Other projects include coping with learning difficulties; promoting continuing education; pre-school education; tertiary education; promoting interest in the learning of science and mathematics and vernacular education. Since the inception of PECC, the Socio-Economic and Environmental Research Institute (SERI) has been appointed its secretariat. The key objective of Arts-Ed is the promotion of arts in education through the adoption of innovative and creative, largely non-formal, methods. Its projects were funded, though not exclusively, by the PECC through allocations given by the then state government.

4.      Among the arts promoted include street theatrical performances, music of sound, photography, and appreciation of history through heritage trails and oral history. The latter hopes to raise the awareness of students in the age group of 10 to 19 of Penang’s rich historical treasure through appreciation of the state’s manifold heritage.

5.      Two projects were already identified by Arts-Ed for approval, funding and implementation during my tenure as Chairman of PECC under this heritage education project. They are Anak-Anak Kota, which was carried out very successfully in the inner city of Georgetown and my BalikPulau, which was launched personally by me in 2006, in Balik Pulau. The newsletter, my BalikPulau, which also received funding later from the Penang Tourism Action Council and DiGi during the tenure of the previous government, is the output of the heritage project carried out in Balik Pulau.

6.      In all its activities, Arts-Ed’s aims have always been to promote learning through the arts such as theatrical performances, photography, drawing, workshops, research and documentation, visits to inherited architectural sites, and interviews with citizens in the crafts and old human settlements. Their work has always been, and still is, of the most creative sort, thereby stimulating learning in the young, whose backgrounds cut across all racial and religious boundaries.

7.      I therefore find it most objectionable and shocking that Muhammad Farid and several Malay groups could assert that the newsletter, my BalikPulau, had writings and illustrations that insulted the Malays. I have personally gone through the newsletter and have found no substance to such allegations. On the contrary, it was a well researched document that contains the writings of the talented young of all ethnic communities based on their oral history.

8.      They, and of course Miss Janet Pillai and her entire team at Arts-Ed, should all be congratulated on a fine effort. Indeed, Janet and her team’s passion and commitment to the promotion of the arts in education among all races, have long been acknowledged by members of the PECC. Having worked with her in the PECC, I can say with some confidence that the standard of the arts in the state of Penang has been raised as a result of the work of Janet and her team in Arts-Ed. This would not have been possible, had we just relied on the formal school system which has long neglected the arts. UNESCO has acknowledged her work as much by inviting her to conduct regional workshops to train trainers in arts-ed.

9.      I would like, in conclusion, to once again stress that myBalikPulau project is a heritage appreciation project covering heritage trails, photography and oral history by young schoolchildren from all ethnic communities, which was initiated, launched and funded by the PECC under the previous state government. The present State Government is not involved. As the former Chairman of PECC, I am proud of the work of Arts-Ed led by Janet Pillai, as indeed I am of the work of other committees such as on learning difficulties; pre-school education; continuing education; promoting science and mathematics education, Chinese and Tamil education and tertiary education. Over it’s more than a decade of operation, PECC has nurtured many ideas that were later realized, thanks to the commitment and passion of its members.

10.  I am of the view that those who have accused Arts-Ed and the current Penang State Government of having insulted the Malays through the publication, my BalikPulau, have been most unfair to the many who have come forward voluntarily to serve the cause of education in the state. They have also hurt the feelings of the many students who have put in so much effort in the production of myBalikPulau. The participation of these students was driven and motivated by nothing more than the genuine desire to seek knowledge. They clearly had no intention of belittling any one community.

Kenyataan Akhbar bagi Penerbitan ‘myBALIKPulau’ oleh Toh Kin Woon, Bekas Ahli Majlis Mesyuarat Kerajaan Negeri untuk Pendidikan

1.     myBALIKPulau, sebuah risalah terbitan Arts-ED (Persatuan Pendidikan Seni Pulau Pinang), iaitu sebuah badan bukan kerajaan yang berdedikasi dalam mempromosi seni dalam bidang pendidikan, baru-baru ini telah dikritik oleh YB Muhammad Farid Saad, Ahli Dewan Undangan Negeri Pulau Betong dan juga oleh beberapa kumpulan Melayu sejak awal bulan Februari tahun ini. Banyak laporan polis telah dibuat dan penyiasatan polis juga sedang dijalankan. Mereka telah mendakwa bahawa risalah tersebut mengandungi fakta sejarah dan illustrasi yang tidak benar yang mana telah menghina kaum Melayu. Mereka turut menekankan bahawa Kerajaan Negeri semasa bertanggungjawab menerbitkan risalah myBALIKPulau.

2.       Saya, sebagai Bekas Ahli Majlis Mesyuarat Kerajaan Negeri untuk Pendidikan ingin membuat beberapa penjelasan berkenaan dengan Arts-ED dan risalah, myBALIKPulau.

3.       Arts-ED yang dilancarkan pada tahun 1999 adalah salah satu inisiatif dibawah Majlis Perundingan Pendidikan Pulau Pinang (PECC) yang mana saya telah memegang jawatan Pengerusi sejak 1997 di mana Majlis tersebut ditubuhkan sehingga 8hb Mac 2008. Antara projek lain adalah termasuk menghadapi kesukaran pembelajaran; promosi pendidikan lanjutan (seumur hidup); pendidikan pra-sekolah;  pendidikan pengajian tinggi; mempromosi minat dalam pembelajaran sains dan matematik dan pendidikan vernakular. Semenjak penubuhan PECC, Institut Kajian Sosio-Ekonomi dan Alam Sekitar (SERI) telah dilantik sebagai urusetia. Matlamat utama Arts-ED adalah mempromosikan pendidikan seni secara tak formal dengan menerapkan elemen inovatif dan kreatif. Walaupun bukan secara eksklusif, projek-projek Arts-ED telah dibiayai oleh PECC melalui pemberian peruntukan oleh Kerajaan Negeri yang dahulu.

4.       Antara kesenian yang dipromosikan adalah persembahan teater jalanan, alunan muzik, fotografi dan apresiasi sejarah menerusi jejak warisan dan sejarah lisan. Ia berharap untuk meningkatkan kesedaran murid-murid berumur 10 hingga 19 tahun akan sejarah Pulau Pinang yang  kaya melalui pendekatan apresiasi kelebihan warisan negeri.

5.       Dua buah projek dibawah Pendidikan Warisan telah dikenalpasti untuk diluluskan pembiayaan dan perlaksanaan semasa tempoh saya memegang jawatan Pengerusi PECC. Ia terdiri daripada Anak-Anak Kota yang telah berjaya dilaksanakan di bandar  George Town dan myBALIKPulau yang telah dilancarkan oleh saya pada tahun 2006 di Balik Pulau. Risalah myBALIKPulau yang mana merupakan hasil (output) projek warisan yang telah dilaksanakan di Balik Pulau turut menerima pembiayaan daripada Majlis Tindakan Pelancongan Pulau Pinang dan DiGi semasa pemerintahan Kerajaan Negeri yang dahulu.

6.       Menerusi kebanyakan aktivitinya, Arts-ED bermatlamat untuk mempromosi pembelajaran menggunakan pendekatan seni seperti persembahan teater, fotografi, lukisan, bengkel, penyelidikan dan dokumentasi, lawatan sambil belajar ke kawasan senibina bersejarah dan wawancara bersama rakyat berkenaan dengan hasil kraftangan dan penempatan manusia yang lama. Kerja mereka telah dan masih menggunakan pendekatan kreatif yang mengalakkan pembelajaran di kalangan orang muda tanpa mengira batasan latarbelakang sama ada bangsa atau agama.

7.       Saya terkejut dan tidak bersetuju dengan pandangan YB Muhammad Farid dan beberapa kumpulan Melayu yang menekankan bahawa isi kandungan risalah myBALIKPulau menerapkan tulisan dan illustrasi yang menghina Melayu. Saya sendiri telah meneliti risalah tersebut dan tidak menemui sebarang maklumat yang menyokong dakwaan mereka. Disebaliknya, ia adalah sebuah dokumen yang telah diselidik secara teliti oleh anak-anak muda yang berbakat yang terdiri daripada pelbagai komuniti etnik berdasarkan sejarah lisan asal usul mereka.

8.       Mereka dan terutamanya Puan Janet Pillai serta keseluruhan ahli kumpulannya di Arts-ED seharusnya disanjungi atas hasil usaha yang indah ini. Sememangnya, Puan Janet Pillai dan ahli-ahli kumpulannya telah menampilkan komitmen dan minat yang mendalam dalam mempromosikan seni dalam pendidikan di kalangan pelbagai bangsa yang mana telah diperakui oleh ahli-ahli PECC. Setelah bekerjasama dengan Puan Janet dalam PECC, saya berani menyatakan bahawa tahap seni di Pulau Pinang telah ditingkatkan hasil usaha Puan Janet dan ahli kumpulannya di Arts-ED. Perkara ini adalah suatu yang tidak mungkin berhasil jika kita hanya semata-mata bergantung kepada sistem sekolah yang berunsur formal yang telah mengenepikan aspek seni dalam pembelajaran. UNESCO telah turut memperakui kerja Puan Janet sehingga mempelawa beliau untuk mengadakan bengkel diperingkat serantau untuk memberi latihan dalam pendidikan seni.

9.      Secara kesimpulan, saya ingin menegaskan bahawa projek myBALIKPulau adalah sebuah projek apresiasi warisan yang merangkumi jejak warisan, fotografi dan sejarah lisan yang telah dilancarkan dan dibiayai oleh PECC dibawah pimpinan kerajaan negeri yang dahulu (lama) serta dilaksanakan oleh pelajar-pelajar sekolah daripada pelbagai kumpulan etnik. Kerajaan Negeri semasa (kini) langsung tidak terlibat dalam projek ini. Saya, sebagai bekas Pengerusi PECC, sangat berbangga akan hasil usaha Arts-ED yang diterajui oleh Puan Janet Pillai dan juga usaha jawatankuasa yang lain seperti kesukaran pembelajaran, pendidikan pra-sekolah, pembelajaran lanjutan (seumur hidup), pendidikan penggalakan sains dan matematik, pendidikan Cina dan Tamil serta pendidikan pengajian tinggi. PECC yang telah beroperasi lebih daripada sedekad tahun telah menjana dan merealisasikan banyak idea disebabkan komitmen dan minat yang mendalam ahli-ahlinya.

10.   Saya berpendapat bahawa mereka yang telah mendakwa Arts-ED dan Kerajaan Negeri semasa (kini) telah menghina Melayu menerusi penerbitan myBALIKPulau adalah tidak berlaku adil terhadap yang telah menawarkan khidmat secara sukarela untuk pembangunan pendidikan di Pulau Pinang. Mereka turut telah menyakitkan hati ramai para pelajar (anak-anak muda) yang telah bertungkus-lumus dalam penerbitan myBALIKPulau. Penyertaan para pelajar dalam projek ini adalah atas dorongan dan motivasi serta tidak lebih daripada keinginan sebenar untuk menimba ilmu. Mereka tidak berniat untuk mempersendakan mana-mana komuniti.

杜乾焕关于《我的浮罗山背》之声明

 

1．《我的浮罗山背》，是一份由推动艺术教育的非政府组织— 槟城艺术及古迹教育协会（Arts-Ed）所出版的刊物。这份刊物自今年2月初就遭到浮罗勿洞区州议员莫哈末.法力及数个马来人组织的攻击。他们多次报警，而警方也开始进行调查。他们指控这份刊物含有不正确的史实和插图，侮辱了马来人。他们也声称目前的州政府在背后支持《我的浮罗山背》的出版。

2．作为前任掌管教育事务的州行政议员，我要对Arts-ED和《我的浮罗山背》这份刊物作出几项澄清。

3． 1999年成立的 Arts-ED，是当时槟城教育咨询委员会（PECC）所进行的数个计划之一。我从1997年槟城教育咨询委员会成立时开始担任其主席，直到2008年3月8日。其它的计划项目包括应付学习障碍、推动终身学习、学前教育、大专教育、推动学习数理的兴趣，及母语教育。自槟城教育咨询委员会成立后，社会经济与环境研究中心（SERI）就被委任为其秘书处。Arts-ED 的主要宗旨是通过采纳革新与创意且大部分为非正式的方法推动艺术教育。Arts-Ed的项目大多由槟城教育咨询委员会通过当时州政府提供的拨款资助。

4．所推动的艺术包括了街头戏剧表演、音乐、摄影，及通过古迹路径和口述历史去促进对历史的领会。后者希望通过对槟州多样化遗产的领会，提升10-19岁之间学生对槟城丰富历史资产的醒觉。

5．在我担任城教育咨询委员会主席时，两项由Arts-ED鉴定的计划，在这古迹教育项目下获得批准、资助并付诸于执行。这些计划是《城市小孩》（Anak-anak Kota），相当成功地在乔治市内城区落实；以及本人亲自于2006年在浮罗山背推介的《我的浮罗山背》。前任政府在位期间，作为在浮罗山背古迹项目成品的《我的浮罗山背》这份刊物也获得槟城旅游促进委员会及Digi的资助。

6．Arts-ED的所有活动，都是为了通过戏剧表演、摄影、绘画、工作坊、研究和记录等艺术，游览古迹建筑，及访问传统行业与居住在古迹社区内人士，去推动学习。他们的工作一直都是富有创意，因此激励来跨越种族和宗教背景的年青人之学习。

7．因此，我对莫哈末.法力和数个马来组织声称《我的浮罗山背》含有羞辱马来人的文字和插图之说法感到震惊且不苟同。本人亲自翻阅这份刊物，并没有发现任何与这些指责相关的内容。与此相反，这是一份经过充分研究的文献，包含了由来自各族群年青人根据口述历史所写的文字。

8．这些年青人，还有珍妮特.彼莱（Janet Pillai）和她的Arts-ED 团队，都应该因他们的努力而受到肯定。实际上，珍妮特和她的团队在各族群间推动艺术教育的热诚与献身精神，长久以来都得到槟城教育咨询委员会的承认。以本人曾与她在槟城教育咨询委员会里共事的经验，可以肯定地说，槟城州的艺术水准得以提升，要归功于珍妮特和她的Arts-ED 团队之工作。我们仅仅依靠长久以来忽略艺术的正规学校制度，是不可能达到提升艺术水准的。联合国教科文组织确认她的工作，甚至邀请她进行区域性工作营，以培训从事艺术教育的培训员。

9．总而言之，本人再次强调，《我的浮罗山背》是一项涵盖古迹路径、摄影及由来自各族群年青学生们所收集的口述历史等的古迹鉴赏计划。这项计划是由前朝州政府下的槟城教育咨询委员会所发起、推介及资助。现任州政府并没有涉及在其中。身为前任槟城教育咨询委员会主席，本人对珍妮特.彼莱所领导的Arts-ED之工作感到骄傲，就像其他委员会的工作一样，如学习障碍、学前教育、华文与淡米尔文教育，及高等教育等委员会。在其超过十年的运作中，槟城教育咨询委员会孕育了很多的构想，而这些构想都在其成员的献身精神与热诚下得以实现。

10．本人认为，那些指责Arts-ED和当前州政府通过《我的浮罗山背》这份刊物羞辱马来人的人士，对很多义务站出来为槟州教育奉献的人士非常不公平。他们也伤害了很多付出极大努力去出版《我的浮罗山背》的学生们之感受。这些学生的参与，是由追求知识的真诚渴望所驱动与激励。他们很明显并没有任何企图要贬低任何族群。
